the scent sense

I have heard the most memorable sense.. is smell... and I do think it is true. A certain smell will instantly send me back in time to a place or remind me of a person. Like my dad.. when I smell the black chapstick (original I think?) or neutrogena shaving cream.. his face flashes through my mind like an old picture show.. My mother has a more beautiful and elegant fragrance.. its a mixture of blush and a sweet vanilla scent. So everytime I apply makeup my mom comes to mind.
Other random things.. like the smell of apple pie reminds me of our annual Barry Apple Festival and fall time in general... and I start reminiscing of golden leaves, parades, funnel cakes, and old friends...
The horrible smell of incense takes me to the time when my brother lived with a guy named Jared, and their appartment reeked of it. That was years ago.. but after staying a night with them, it was engraved in my memory forever.
Its so strange how a smell hits our nose and triggers a vision of the past... A ghost hidden inside our brain waiting to be unleashed with a single sniff! Ahhh... breathe in the memories..

what smells make you remember when?

Chlorine bleach always makes me think of the pool I lived at during junior high (and the lifeguard I was SURE I was going to marry!!)

Starburst fruit chews... I can't even open a bag without catching a wiff & being swept back 20 years to our old boat dock on the mighty Mississipi rocking up and down on the waves- of course I am as red as a lobster and I have sand in my bikini bottoms. Where was my mom???
